Gretsch used several different serial number schemes through the years. Each of them can be used to accurately pinpoint the age of a guitar, if you have the correct information. Most online guides and quite a few print guides are based on Jay Scott’s groundbreaking book ” Gretsch: the guitars of the Fred Gretsch Company ,” which is a fine book, but is nearly two decades old. Subsequent research has unearthed quite a few inaccuracies in Scott’s numbers, so any serial number guides cribbing from Scott are also incorrect.
The Gretsch-GEAR database exists to get it right: to document the actual serial numbers, to determine once and for all what was built and when, and to harness the collective knowledge of thousands of Gretsch fans to put the pieces together. From the beginning of the Synchromatic era until , Gretsch guitars were sequentially numbered and can be used to reliably date the guitar.
However, it is important to note several key points:. Gretsch began numbering guitars sequentially, probably in but possibly earlier. The numbers, by model year: Less than Pre-war 10xx to 20xx Approximately 20xxxx Approximately 30xx to 40xx Approximately 40xx to 50xx Approximately 50xx to 70xx Approximately 70xx to 90xx 90xx to xx xx to xx xx to xx xx to xx Note: serial numbers from were misplaced and later turned up, with original ‘style labels, in Date-coded serial numbers are typically found stamped on the back or top of the headstock, and “Made in USA” is stamped next to the number starting in June For example, should be February 2 , 7 and the th instrument made that month.

Clearly, the effort worked. Both had hollow bodies that were 16 inches wide and 2. Likewise, their necks had ebony fingerboards, and they were made to the shorter traditional A series of spec sheets for the Gretsch Anniversary models taken from various catalogues in the s. Although the model numbers were generally less referred to than that of the eponymous , the Anniversaries had theirs, too: for the Single in sunburst and in Two-Tone, for the Double in sunburst and in Two-Tone.
A bound neck and headstock, bound f-holes, and a Bigsby — and that was about it. Not that we whole-heartedly recommend this route: such modification requires careful consideration of the potential devaluation of an original vintage guitar, weighed alongside the expense of having such work done professionally. But beneath the top plate lurked just one lightly wound coil, positioned off to one side of the structure, with a magnet attached to it side-on.
The company was obviously quite pleased with the new units, and presented dealers and customers with a brochure entirely dedicated to these components.

From to , Gretsch serial numbers are sequential, but the manner and placement of the serial numbers on the guitars varies quite a bit. Toward the end of , Baldwin took over the Gretsch Company. These serial numbers were also either 5 or 6 digit numbers, depending on the month of production. The numbers were once again located on the back of the headstock and would have been printed in Gold, Black or White depending on the color of the guitar.
Obviously, with the change of the decade, there is plenty of room for confusion in interpreting the numbers. The numbers for the months, October 10 , November 11 , and December 12 , can also be interpreted as 10 January , 11 January and 12 January The only way to be clear, is to have an understanding of the feature sets of the instruments from the era.
In about , Gretsch began to use another version of the Orange and Grey label on F-Hole instruments. It was used until In , the 2nd iteration of the Baldwin era Gretsch label was introduced.
New to the forum but Fender only has records back to so hoping someone here may be able to help. It does not have the pad on the back and only one pickup selector no mud switch like many other country classic models have had. Only problem is there is no serial number on the back of the headstock and I am having a hard time dating when and where the guitar was made.
The store told me it was a USA made model but just looking to see if I bought a gem or a dud.
